MAPS Works with Families to file Long Term Care Medicaid
At Medicaid Application Processing Services, LLC, ("MAPS") our story began with a passion for helping families during a difficult time in their lives. Placing a loved one into a nursing home and having to pay for that care is stressful. We strive to help the families meet existing Medicaid asset criteria by explaining the details so the family can understand what is required to be approved by Medicaid. We work hand in hand wiith the family as we apply for long term care Medicaid for the Claimant.
MAPS has over 18 years experience dealing with Alabama Medicaid. We work hard to take the stress off the family as we negotiate the criteria for Medicaid approval. We work hand-in-hand with the Alabama Family Trust, local Elder Law Attorneys and Medicaid Supervisors to ensure each family meets asset criteria. This includes monthly income caps for the "Claimant" (loved one applying for Medicaid), dealing with assets over and above Medicaid guidelines, investments, etc. When needed, we will refer our clients to an Elder Law Attorney who will handle drafting a Power of Attorney, file for conservatorship and/or guardianship for the Claimant or any other legal work that needs to be done. We are a member of the Better Business Bureau and our clients leave comments and referrals on our work often.
This is a common misconception! Medicaid does NOT want your house. If we are applying for Medicaid for a spouse Medicaid will place a lien on the home. The Community Spouse can live in the home until they pass away. Medicaid will require the home sold at that time and the amount paid on behalf of the Claimant paid from those proceeds.
Each Claimant is required to pay their pension benefits to the Nursing Home. But, Alabama Medicaid has a Minimum Monthly Needs Allowance ("MMNA") which requires that the spouse have a certain level of income. If the Community Spouse falls below this income threshold, Medicaid will assign a portion of the Claimant's income to the spouse.
Another common misconception! If the Claimant is married Medicaid considers all assets to be jointly owned. There is an asset cap in the State of Alabama which we must abide by. The Community Spouse gets to keep one-half (1/2) of the assets up to the asset cap. Thiis number changes annually and we work with outside agencies like the Alabama Family Trust when planning for the Asset overage.
While this is a correct number, it is deceiving. The cost of the "funeral" portion of the Claimant is limited to $5,000. But, this number does NOT include the cemetery side. In other words, Medicaid does not count in that $5,000 total the casket, opening/closing of the grave, headstone, foot marker or the vault.
As elder law practioners we frequently meet with clients (or loved ones) who need Medicaid. We used to prepare the applications in-house and it consumed many hours of staff time. A few years ago we started outsourcing the preparation of virtually all Medicaid appliations to Pam Strickland, who owns Medicaid Application Processing ("MAPS"). I do not know the numbers but over the years I am guessing Pam has done more Medicaid applications than anyone else in our area. She does great work. Save money and time by hiring a expert.
I wish I could rate higher than five stars. Pam handled everything for us and made it easy. She was successful in getting benefits for my father. The thing I appreciated most was her integrity. We highly recommend her, and in fact, I have.
I have been an attorney for many years, so I believed that when my mother needed to apply for Medicaid benefits, I could properly handle the application process. I was wrong. I quickly decided I needed an expert to assist and I was directed by a friend to Pam. She quickly prepared my mother's Medicaid application and the application was approved without any further requests for information or delay. I am certain the process would not have been this easy without Pam. She answered all my questions about the process and has repeatedly shown me she can competently handle it all. If you need assistance with a Medicaid application, it is well worth it to hire Pam.
